A woman lies smoking in front of a deck of cards. casual. Sensual. With life lived on my face. It's exactly this cool free spirit that runs through the sound of the Hamburg jazz band Sir Bradley. And the cover photo for their debut album "During My Lunch Break" already radiates a lot of the multi-layered energy that characterizes this septet with a strong character. Everything rises in the highly imaginative compositions: memories and fantasies, intoxication and melancholy, lost loves and unleashed anger. Sir Bradley makes all these states and moods vibrate. Pulsating and demanding, with friction and drive. After all, the band name is inspired by an encounter with legendary racing cyclist Sir Bradley Marc Wiggins. The result: "FinalStraightJazz". And the musicians bring it to the start in an extraordinary mix of fusion, free and modern jazz.
SirBradley is a music-making collective that beautifully ignores all age stereotypes. And by the way, the artists set a few clearly feminist milestones. Bandleader and bassist Maria Rothfuchs founded SirBradley in 2018 together with Doro Offermann (tenor saxophone), Annette Kayser (drums) and Lovis Determann (guitar) initially as a quartet. Gradually, Sonja Beeh (trombone), Magdalena Abrams (bass clarinet) and Catharina Boutari (vocals) were added, so that influences from blue note jazz to avant-garde to indie pop are now releasing a highly suspenseful and subtle sound.
Patterns, melodies and improvisations result in unique and idiosyncratic instrumental pieces, to which Catharina Boutari adds a completely new twist with her singing. But with Sir Bradley, it's not just the voice that does the storytelling. Rather, each instrument has a strong narrative quality. This democratic principle ensures that the audience experiences an incredibly varied program live. At Jazz Baltica, Jazz Open Hamburg and the FatJazz OpenAir, Sir Bradley has already sparked great enthusiasm - among jazz fans and far beyond. The band strives for the big festivals as well as the small clubs. "We as a group have the responsibility that the others sound good," says Maria Rothfuchs. "SirBradley is a band that makes it easy for the soloist to take off and fly."
