Sturm und Drang on the baroque lute: Gabriele Janneck presents new album with sonatas by Bernhard Joachim Hagen.
For Gabriele Janneck, the heyday of the baroque lute never came to an end with the death of Bach's contemporary Sylvius Leopold Weiss, but she particularly appreciates the late phase of the instrument, which disappeared around 1800. Accordingly, four sonatas by Bernhard Joachim Hagen (1720 to 1787) can be heard on her new album, after she had previously recorded a Weiss CD.
Although Hagen actually came to the Bayreuth court as a violinist for Margravine Wilhelmine, he is remembered for his lute music. He uses the thick sound of the late baroque lute with its huge range for a musical language full of storm and urge. Gabriele's album title "Franconian Rocks" therefore alludes both to the rocks of Hagen's Franconian adopted home and to the character of many of his works.
With the selected sonatas in C minor, E flat major, B flat major and F minor, Gabriele wants to depict as much as possible of the diversity of expression in Hagen's music. She produced the album together with Martin Janneck. It appears on the Osnabrück record label Timezone. The project was funded with a grant as part of the "Neustart Kultur" program, initiated by the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media and distributed via the German Music Council.
