The album title "Bachiana" is an allusion to the "Bachianas Brasileiras" by Heitor Villa-Lobos. There are also pieces by Johann Sebastian Bach, Alessandro Marcello, Charles Gounod, Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern and Leonard Cohen. As this list of composers already shows, the genre affiliations are pretty much irrelevant. Jazz musicians have always used either current hits or tracks they just liked. Anything improvised about can be jazz. language of Johann Sebastian Bach will become the dominant element. Bach has influenced musicians across all genres. Not only is he one of my favorite composers, but he was also a great improviser. That, in turn, is known to be the essence of jazz.
