When acoustic pop absorbs the languages and color facets of this world, it becomes world pop, the sound of wanderlust. Ronja Maltzahn will release her second album, "#worldpop", in November. 15 songs, one poetry, four chapters, six languages, 20 instrumentalists, twelve choir singers. A big vision. Recorded not far from Osnabrück at Fox Recording Studios Telgte, mixed in Argentina by Grammy Award winner Sebastian Perkal, mastered at Trakworx Studios, San Francisco.
"How could she have believed that the Mattisburg was the whole world?" (Astrid Lindgren)
As a sequel to Beautiful Mess (2019), Ronja has given her music a name. The new album takes the listener on a musical journey around the world: a frog follows its curiosity, the inner wolf howling of longing, shakes off the inner doubter, makes itself light as a butterfly and spreads its wings. Take a bird's-eye view of the world's jigsaw puzzles and be amazed. About the changing colors of the seasons, the ocean of time.
Flies from Moscow to Paris and begins to believe in big dreams. Builds a castle in the clouds until homesickness catches up. Because happiness is only real when it is shared.
In search of his roots, he finds his way back home, where his nest and his pack await.
The album is divided into four chapters, Ocean of Time (winter), Sound of the Forest (spring), Forever on the Road (summer) and Finding Home (fall). The artist Annika von der Ley from Münster designed the four-part banner that illustrates all four chapters.
Ronja not only loves to combine musical styles and linguistic facets in her music, but also to bring people together with their different arts.
"It takes teamwork to do dreamwork" is the motto of the robber's daughter.
With her musical partner Federico Marina, she played almost 200 concerts last year, in a wide variety of formations, from acoustic duo to 12-piece big band on the rock festival stage, everything was there: cello, nyckelharpa, handpan, Celtic harp, saxophone, violin , double bass, ukulele, guitarlele, drums, percussion, tuba, horns, trumpet, flugelhorn, singers and dancers... Ronja and Fede write most of their songs with acoustic guitar or piano alone.
Where Ronja's wealth of ideas bubbles inexhaustibly, so does Fede's technical know-how. Originally a bass player and singer, he becomes a cameraman and video editor, designer, stage manager, light and sound technician at Ronja's side, who also plays the guitar, cajon, chimes, shaker, glockenspiel and bass while singing and jumping on stage.
In no time at all, the two unpack their portable home from their music van, their own stage with a colorful 4-meter banner, carpet, umbrella lamp, giant teddy bear, colorful lights, fog and bubble machine, their own P/A and countless instruments. And then sometimes three, sometimes eight or sometimes 12 musicians hop into the musical living room. They have now visited more than 15 different countries with their music.
"Forever on the road, let's keep on dreaming." (quote track 14, #WORLDPOP)
The album artwork was designed by Hanna Ligeti (ligarti.de), in a multi-layered collage all aspects and stories of the individual songs are merged into a total work of art.
A visual artist has created an individual artwork for each of the 15 songs. The 15 artworks will then be printed in the CD booklet when it comes out in November.
Anyone who would like to gain a closer impression of the work and support the project can become a part of the "Club of wild robber children" at www.patreon.com/ronjamaltzahn. There the individual works of art and songs are pre-released, there Ronja shares her creativity at close range.
The first single was released in May during lockdown, 'All Time'. along with the piano ballad "Mother" for Mother's Day. On 08/21 "Mr.Doubtful" is the next single to dance through the summer with, which gives a foretaste of the new record. A French bossa nova will follow in September before the full album is released. The songs will be published on all streaming platforms with a matching music video on YouTube.
